Storytelling for Gender Justice

A workshop to find, shape and share stories of gender inequality and hope for a better future.

Sometimes the pain and frustration of trying to explain how pervasive gender inequality is and the deep impact it has, can have you pulling your hair out. Really, you don’t understand how that might be sexist?

A well crafted and emotionally told personal story about the lived experience of discrimination, harassment or violence, its impact, how we made sense of it and grew differently because of it, is our super power.

The story process urges us to not only make sense of our experiences, but to bring our story to a place of peace, hope or resolution. This is a huge task for such an intractable and divisive issue as gender inequality, but it is the strength of story and the work we do to craft a story.

Once we have created this kind of story we can use it in infinite ways – we can stretch it out or shrink it down depending on time, we can alter certain parts for different audiences, and change the meaning and message depending on our purpose.

In this workshop we will explore story worthy moments that impacted us, and learn to shape them into compelling, convincing and empowering narratives that show rather than tell.

And along the way we get to make sense of our experiences and transcend them through the oldest restorative process known to humans – the story.

Numbers limited - so get in quick!

September 21, 2018  Theme: Football

Tell us a story about football - playing, yearning, kicking and running,  watching, waiting, hating or avoiding. Tell us about discovering, not understanding, loving and loathing, culture or cringe. The oval or round ball, the oval or rectangular ground, the sexism, exclusion, and invisibility. The barracking, the crushes, the colours and the club.  How it played out, or not, at home, in your family, in the school yard or the street. Or tell us a story of not-football.

 August 17, 2018 Theme: Tears

Tell us about a time the tears came, unbidden, unwanted, unexpected, or perhaps a story of when you were so overjoyed, your cup runneth over and your eyes spilled saltwater. A time you swallowed hard, or howled in anguish, when the dam burst and you couldn’t stop, of being spent, washed clean, exhausted, renewed or released. Tell us about a time someone else cried and you comforted, or cried too or turned away. Tell us when your heart burst with love and you teared up with emotion, or when wave just hit, for no reason at all.
